Are You Thriving or Surviving?

By 9pm, all of my energy is gone. Whispering good night to my kids and managing the seven stairs down to my bedroom, I congratulate myself on surviving.

Surviving, not thriving, is my goal this season.

And that’s okay.

Maybe you have been there?

My season is marked by a big move. My husband is seven hours away. I’m temporarily single-parenting my 10, 7, and 3 year-olds. Single moms have my sincere respect! We are all excited for this wonderful opportunity ahead of us, but it is not easy. Moving, in fact, is one of the most stressful life events (up there with divorce, death, and illness).

Your season of survival may look different than mine. I imagine it feels similar, though.

Exhaustion sets in: mentally, emotionally and physically. Comparison threatens to knock you over at every turn. Feelings of failure fill your soul. Guilt overwhelms you.

It is tough. Please hear those words: it is tough.

I am so fortunate to have God and a friend speaking truth into my life right now. If you are in a season of surviving, may I speak some truth into your life?

You are a good person. You are doing the very best you can in the midst of a difficult situation. (These words echo what my friend spoke to me.)

It is okay to have a goal of simply surviving. Minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day. You will get through this.

“There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while.” 1 Peter 1:6, NLT

“The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” Lamentations 3:22-23, NLT

God knew you would endure this season even before you were born. He knew of your struggles, frustrations and desperation. He saw your tears. He witnessed your reactions. Even the worst of them, the ones causing you guilt and shame. And guess what? He still breathed life into you. He looked beyond your sin and saw something beautiful. Something purposeful. Something necessary.

This season? It is temporary. I know, it may not feel that way. I know you may not believe you could ever have joy again. I know it is hard to trust God in this difficult season.

Lean in to God. Give it all to Him. And allow yourself the grace He so willingly offers.

You have my permission to simply survive.

Once this season passes, we will thrive.

In pursuit of Him,

P.S. Please forgive any errors in this post. I’m simply too tired to edit (insert laughing emoji).
